The Navy's economic impact in Rhode Island is legendary. The naval installation mirrors a miniature America, flavored with an international touch. Naval personnel assigned to Newport arrive from all parts of the United States and many free nations of the world. Naval Station Newport's mission is to fulfill the diverse requirements of its tenant commands by providing the facilities and infrastructure that are essential to their optimum performance. Newport is the Navy's premier site for training officers, officer candidates, senior enlisted personnel and midshipman candidates, as well as conducting advanced undersea warfare and development systems. By 1913, the Navy had constructed a Naval Hospital on the mainland of Aquidneck Island. In the 1880s, a new concept of shore-based training for officers and enlisted personnel was developed, and the Navy turned to Narragansett Bay.
Until the last two decades of the 19th century, a sailor learned most of his trade on the job. From its infancy during the Revolutionary War to its present day technology, the United States Navy has been a part of Narragansett Bay.
